Apparently the first official samples from the Nikon D2X will be made available on Dec 6th.
Hopefully Nikon are keeping to the original delivery schedule of Jan 2005 for the camera to consumers. :D

Its gonna be a busy day full of rants on places like DPreview that day!
Let's hope the delivery date is met. I also hope the Kodak slr/n will offer that $1000 price drop when it comes out!

I'd like a few RAW samples posted and a couple full sized JPG's too. hehe. Oh well. We'll see what it does when it comes. Only the D2x can save me from going to Canon at this point.

I too, am curious to see what the D2x offers. On paper (except for the highest ISO being 800) it looks great.
If nikon does not offer an upgrade path for the D2h, I suspect we'll see a lot of used D2h's for sale in the new year.

We may not be getting too many more 35mm based DSLRs. It looks like the industry is finally getting some reasonable alternatives. If you add what we spend on film to our equipment budget then we might just take the leap to MF. Check out the new Hasselblad H1D
http://www.hasselbladusa.com/
The thing has a 40 GB hard drive that holds 850 full resolution 22 Mpixel pictures. No more slow CF cards. Flash sync to 1/800 sec. and it will use all of our current CZ lenses. I'll bet this thing rocks. Wonder what the retail will be?.....................Would you believe a mear $22K............Thats just $1,000 per Mpizel.
...............I know.....I know.......some of you will gripe because it uses those expensive CR 123 batteries.

That is an external hard drive, BTW, for tethered shooting. However, it is a standalone hard drive, no computer needed that will run for 8 hours on one charge. :)

But us wedding guys are use to carrying bricks around our waist. Besides if the camera had a hard disk of any size the gyro effect might hinder your ability to hold the camera on a moving subject. Of course if it clipped to my belt a hard drive might give me a pretty sexy pelvic gyration.

Oh, I hope Brian just renames it f/c mount.....
I am looking forward to see the new 10 MP digital back (ISO 100-1600) for the Leica SLR's. I have played around with the R series Leica and their lenses just blow me away. I know, very expensive stuff, but very high quality.

Wayne,
I believe the D2X will have a mode that allows you to shoot direct to hard disk without going to CF. I dont knwo exactly how this will work but it is part of the support for the newer technologies e.g. I believe - PictBridge, that allow this.
Just imaging an 80GB laptop disk (£150/$250) in your shirt pocket with a flexible cord to the camera and a belt power supply. Assuming a 15MB RAW file, then you would only get 5200 shots/disk. :D Much cheaper than a 4GB CF.

hmmm..... sounds intriguing Jonathan, can I have the d2x NOW please I am so bad at waiting!
I guess "Santa" will have to bring two things and IOU for the D2x and something to keep me happy until it gets here that could be very expensive :D
Thanks for the update looking forward to 12/6 to see the images.

Melody,
I would love to be able to deliver a D2X to you for Christmas but unfortunately trips to US West Coast are fully booked ;-)
My sleigh also lost a runner but the elves are working hard and are hoping to get it repaired by mid-Jan2005. I hope the runners dont bend under the weight of the boxes of D2Xs !! :D :D :D

All the press and all the preliminary buzz about this camera, this is the FIRST I have heard of this. Where in fact did you hear about this feature?
You'd think if it was real they would hype the heck out of it, since it would be a first, I believe.
I'm with Wayne, watching the developments in MF. The new Mamiya back, as well as a few others should shake things up. Soone enuff the pros will be back to playing with the big toys.

I'll look forward to seeing the equivalent of a 300+mm image-stabilized lens for that Hassy or Mamiya. There's still a big versatility gap for the big boy formats and it will always be thus.

Why, A good tripod is better. 35mm will always have the edge on MF because it takes a lens with less field of view. Look at the Hasselblad 140-280mm f/5.6 CF Schneider Variogon. It is a $7,000, 10 inch, 4.5 lb. monster of a lens with minimum F-stop of 5.6. Now add auto focus, and image stabilisation and what will you have? A lens that you will never sell, thats what you have. But reduce the field of view (format) on a lens like that and it becomes pretty nice. I also think that the new APS sized lenses are going to offer even more technology in smaller and smaller packages. Just look at the Sigma 18~50 zoom that is cheap and compact. My son-in-law uses one and for most situations and is pretty satisfied, and it is barely bigger than a Nikkor 50mm lens. It is not as good in the wide range as the Nikkor zooms but it is more than adequate.

For what it's worth here is a JPG from the D2X. No real method of verifying that it is real, but EXIF looks 'right' compared with other early samples that I have seen.
http://www.netnetphoto.com/photogallery/albums/nothing/DSC_0001.jpg
Large download, slow speed link.
Real interesting samples will be NEFs but we will also need Nikon Capture 4.2 to be released to process the files. :-(
EXIF info indicates
ISO 100, 28-70mm lens @28mm, 1/60s, f4.
Mode: Programmed Auto.
Flash used in balanced iTTL mode.
Colorspace: ModeIII (sRGB)
Metreing: MultiPattern
Sharpening: Normal
Noise reduction: OFF
8bit Fine JPG, 4288x2848
Apparently Nikon will post some offical samples soon.... tomorrow ?!

OK do they know we are waiting on them? I get very cranky if left in line too long! Guess they aren't giving me any options :(
Hey maybe it's like that saying IF it's good it's worth waiting for! :D

The version of firmware in the EXIF of the sample file is fairly old at v0.16
Unless Nikon have almost no changes to the firmware (I would expect that there will be some progress) then the noise and colour and artefacts should be even more reduced with the 'production' level firmware.
Heard an unsubstantiated rumour that release was 25th Jan 2005.
PMA2005 will also apparently release info on the D2H sensor upgrade.
All rumours without substance at this time ;-)

Nice, there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with the image, except some sligth purple fringing in the small highlights of the eyes. Otherwise solid image (given the shot and lighting)

Well here's the post from http://www.digitalreview.ca/cams/NikonD2X_intro.shtml
Update: Dec 8th, 2004.
Based on a conversation with an authorized representative from Nikon Canada Inc., we have today learned that the anticipated Manufacturer's Recommended Retail Price (MSRP*) for the Nikon D2X Digital SLR will be $6250 CAN. (About $5200 US  based on exchange rates as of 08/12/04)
WOW ! Allot of $$$$$. I hope it's worth it?

Not very big pix, but good colors and standard PR stuff.
It's a start to sample pix anyway. I got the link from RG's forum.
