I'm using rechargeable AA 1800 batteries, they (and regular Alkaline) last forever but my 123 batteries dies after just a day of shooting, I never ever use the internal flash, even if I plug the camera in to the wall the 123 batteries dies and I can't use the camera, if I take out the 123 batteries I can't use the camera, this starts to get expensive.

I was under the impression that the 123 batteries just worked when you use the internal flash and I was also under the impression that the camera would work without the 123 batteries... but for me that's not how it is!

Does anybody know what the problem is???

If you plug the camera into the wall, you are supposed to remove the CR123 batteries or they will be discharged. Check the manual. Probably that is your problem.

The camera should work without the CR123 but the popup flash will not operate.

Matt,

I did not realize that you had to remove the 123 batts when using the AC Adapter - thanks for pointing that out.

Schwenny,

According to the manual, the lithium batteries also power functions such as auto-focus, aperture, mirror and shutter operations, beside charging the flash.

Using an old slow focusing lens with a gear-mashing, high-resistance focusing mechanism has got to use more power than a slick new ultrasonic focus mechanism. My fuzzy 400mm seems to be the kind of lens that draws a lot of power to focus.

My 123 batteries died when I was using my 105 micro, as it was racking the focus from infinity to life size repeatedly.

Hands down the very best prices on Cr123 batteries. I order 2 - 20 packs at a time and split them with a friend who has a S1.
If you get on their email list sometimes they sell 30 or so batteries for the same price as 20. I have been using them for over a year now without any problems.
