This summer I went to India with my S2, 2 256 MB Compact Flash and 1 128 Smartmedia card. I shot aproximately 2600 pics. Every night I saved the daily pics in a 20 GB Rimax DFS with the battery included in the pack. After 24 days I come back with a lot of pictures and the hard disk battery still working. Also I passed, more or less, ten X-Ray controls in differents Indian airports ande the pictures cannot be affected. I am very happy with this hard disk. Anybody have any experience with this hard disk or another one?

I always use a laptop, but have been thinking about using one of these devices, since my laptop is so big and heavy being an old inspiron 8000 tank.

I've been using LeadingSpect's Super Digibin for about 9 months. I have the 40G model, and an aux 4000 mAH battery pack for it. I can take this out into the field with me and dump microdrives to it as I shoot (which is necessary because I shoot RAW and the drives hold only 80 shots). I've taken the thing on three or four trips, including one to Yellowstone in the winter, and I've not lost a single shot with it.

Does anyone from the UK use an external drive to store files. I am trying to find a cheap large storage device to download RAW files to from a 1Gb microdrive.

I use a Lacie 60gig external , Firewired to my desktop , it's the first stop all my pics go into.
If i want to tranfer to my laptop , i have to use the USB2 or firewire connecter, and the a/c adaptor , as it only self powers with a 6 pin firewire, my laptop's 4 pin (as are most others). but it comes with both sets of leads £300. last year ,but the're coming down all the time. it's tough got a rubber caes and when you put the firewire in the groove around the outside, it acts as a buffer .
It's called the Lacie pocket drive. check it out on the net.

Try ebay for the USB 2.0 X drive, try the USA site as they are cheaper and you can just buy the case and put your own HDD in it.
I think with 20gigs they start at 299 bucks US and they will ship to the UK.
I'm going to New York next month and intend to pick one up.

Thanks for the info.
I have just found a Maxtor 250Gb External Storage 5000XT Dual Firewire - USB 2.0 on ebuyer.co.uk for £226 so I'll have to start saving.

I use my old Toshiba Libretto 70 tiny laptop with 10gb HD.
Slow (120mhz), but 10gb is OK for short trips.

Does anyone have the new Archos product yet? AV320 looks really good. It is 20 gig version. Only thing I don't like about this product is that it does not have the Raw file viewer yet.

I use the Smartdisk Flashtrax. It is 30 gb, with a color LCD so you can look at photos if you really want. Battery seems great. I just carry it my bag and switch between two cards.

I just got ImageTank G2 (40gig). I have only used one time and it seems to be OK (terrible UI). I will see how it works in my upcomming trip.
I wanted to FlashTrax so bad, but few reviews I saw made me decide to get ImageTank.
What would be ideal is apple made iPod work for photographers as well.

Thanks.

Tanka,
What have you heard re: the Flash Trax that made you decide not to get it. So far, it is my preferrence, I'm just a bit leary to drop the money on it.
Thanks for the feedback,

Michael,
Sorry, did not see your reply. Once complaint I found was battery life and second was tranfer rate. I don't have them handy now, but you will find them if you google long enough.
But, I think it is no worse than my ImageTank G2. Other tiny factor was $200.00 for the display even thought was one of the major attraction.
In any case, Jeff (here in the list) has one and seems to be happy with it.
Thanks.

Hi folks,
For your info I use the 20 Gy Mind Store. It runs well. The only proble is the battery so I must use two battery paks.
By the way it is a good external hard disk. The cards runs with an adapter PC MIA, so the company always create adapter for every card appears.
Regards.

The Belkin iPod adapter is lame. CF card transfer is very slow (slower than USB 1.1 speed), you'd run out of battery power before you moved a gigabyte card to the iPod. 500 MB takes 22 minutes.
If you want small, fast, MP3 and a built in CF card reader that's self-powered, check out the Archos gmini:

Thanks Tanka... I am placing the Flash Trax on my wish list for now. If Santa happens to think I've been good, I'll get it and report with re: to performance.

Hi all, though mentioned already here just my 2 Baht:
I use my lap (Samsung X10, Centriono WLAN, 1.8 kg) and my 20 gig I Pod but up to now I was just loading my pics from the lap to the I Pod when I wanted to travel light to visit friends and then share pictures or mp3.
May be I'll check the photo card reader... but to be honest :-) I bought the I Pod for listening music and the salesperson told me that I can't store any pics or other data on it. Back home I just tried and you can easily use the I Pod disk via FW to store ALL kind of data. Great thing!
Greetings Einar

The iPod will store anything. That was a big problem for some stores over here and Mac's. Since Mac's don't use registry entries and multiple directories when it installs it's software, people were taking thier iPods to stores, plugging them into Mac's and copying software off the store machines to pirate.

For me the answer is to use a laptop. We have a couple of them that are not fancy wit 30 GB hard drives. If the laptop is too big to lug then I try to take extra CF (and even some old SmartMedia). The laptop also lets me view and work on the pictures in evenings when I travel. One of the new picture storage appliances might be nice for some situations but I think I would rather spend that money on more CF cards. However, I have looked pretty hard at one of these devices called an X-Drive.
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=VP-2030
I have an extra 2.5 inch drive and would use the X-Drive in conjunction with the laptop most of the time. I usually take a small external 2.5 inch drive for redundant backup so this might replace that and provide the card reader function as well. I realize it does not have a display but after you use it for a while and gain confidence in its operation that would probably not be a problem for the few times I would use it without a laptop. I would probably never rely on it to download wedding pictures at the wedding. Our method requires viewing a sample of images on the laptop, not just the thumbnail view supplied by storage appliances, and at least double redundant storage before a CF card is erased.

I have to say Wayne, what you say makes sense for me.
A cataloge shoot shot in RAW, would need about 40 to 50 gigs of space. I have just bought a 120 gig hard drive, external with USB 2 and firewire, and am now looking at what type of laptop I need. Probably with a CD burner, that way my assistant can upload a microdrive, then burn 2 cd's of the data whilst out on location.
Happy clients is what I'm looking for.
Steve
