I know this won't make your decision any easier, but being that Fuji has not announced the S4 or specs on a future camera, on their website that I've seen, anything you hear may or may not be true. Some salesmen may say it's going to be this way just to make conversation or whatever. In the past I've heard sales reps talk a good story and then see nothing like it when the product comes out. Good luck on your decision.

the idea of mating a FULL FRAME S3 sensor with a D2x body is so evident, I see no reason for Fuji not to realize it ! :woot:
18 interpolated megapixels with wide DR on a fast body would be a killer!

A Fuji demo rep speculated that there would be an S4 announced at Photokina in Sept 06.
Watch for price drops on the S3, especially just before the big show. It probably would indicate Fuji's attempt to clear out the S3 inventory.
I expect that if the S4 is announced in Sept, we could be using them by Summer 07. :troutsmac

That would be correct Tom. When I talked to the Fuji rep last month, he told me that it would be announced in Europe for Photokina in Sept 06. He also speculated that it would not be widely available until early 07. I tried to drill the Fuji guy asking about possible features like 14 megapixel, compressed raw files and bigger buffer and he did not know.
I know I am putting aside about $1000 for deposit. I sure would hope on over 12 megapixels and compressed files. It would not hurt if the camera took 6-AA batteries for more shooting time. Gosh, I could think of 5 more upgrades I would like!
Bigger screen
Faster continiuos shooting
Veritical portrait post view
Longer post view time
Lithium ion battery availability
That's all I would like.

the best reliable rumors i have heard comes down to this. fuji will make a new camera based on either a d200 or d2 body. the first rumor from a fuji department was it will be a killer slr. s3 type sensor 12/12 or 16/16mp 5-8fps real pro body lots of fast stuff as fuji wants to enter the photo journalist market.
the other runor is they are not sure of sales for plan a so a watered down verson of a 10/10 d200 body type
the is also a rumbling of a d70 type body with the HR sensor st 10-12mp.
all rumors point to a photokina announce with deliveries at pma time frame. the price ranges are $2500-$5000, so no one really knows i think most state a $3200-3500 price range. the d70 type would be about $1400-1800.
this comes from fuji rep rumors all over the globe. so take it with the grain of salt it was given. i will believe it when i see it.

Ok, new rumuors:
Talking to a photo-pro last weekend (specialised in documentation photography and a Fuji-user since ancient history, means GX 680), he told me he had hands on an S3-body with a 12/12 sensor similar to the one actually used (ok, with twice the pixels).
Actual problem: which body shall be used? On one hand they want to go on with the S3-body, but it seems that it will not be available anymore. With the F6 as a base the DSLR will become very expensive, and the high speed of the F6 can not be used (time consuming after-shoot-calculations), so this would not be necessary. He heard (?) that Fuji is negotiating with Nikon to get the F100 or the F5 as base (specially the last possibility suits me fine :righton: )
It will be interesting... here in Germany we are right now at 999,- Euro for the S3pro...
