 I haven't been around here a whole lot lately...shooting season has begun.

Hopefully my camera and lens will be back before the weekend.

My trusty D2x and 70-200VR have been acting up for a while, but I thought it was just me. Saturday, they shut down (completely) after only a few hours of shooting.

OK, it didn't completely shut down, I was able to manual focus. Sometimes though, the focus ring would slip, and I couldn't focus. Other times I could focus, but not get the shutter to trigger. Very frustrating!!!

I took my camera to the Nikon repair center this AM. The guy checked the camera, and came back with bad news, and maybe a bit of good news.

Good news I'm NOT CRAZY, and I did have problems with both the camera and the lens.

Bad news.....I have also been noticing that shots that were critically focused were not coming out as sharp as they should be. My camera is back focusing really badly, and the AF motor in the lens probably needs to be replaced.

My zoom ring is also horribly tight, which is probably the reason my left elbow and wrist went out last year. I have been using a monopod and zooming by pushing and pulling my hand across the top of the ring lately. I didn't even complain about that....The guy came back and told me it was way too tight. Said there is probably no lubrication in there anymore.

I'm looking at an anticipated repair bill of close to a grand!   I guess it's the cost of shooting!

I just hope I at least get my D2x back before the weekend. I can use my old 80-200, while the other lens is out, I guess. Right now I'm pretty happy I decided NOT to sell that lens! :) I still have my S2, but it has it's own problems... :cry2:

Happy Shooting!
Alissa

My trip to Nikon this AM probably wouldn't have happened if I still had my other car! Got a new one, and wanted to play on the highway!   New car ROCKS! :D :D :D I'm going to be in BIG trouble with this car! It's pretty dang QUICK!!! Got to go play on the street now! :D :D :D

Boy oh boy, what a story. :woot:

When I read things like this, I no longer mind dragging along 30 kilos of stuff around on location (about 66 pounds for the non-metrics among us :D ).

When my D2X ever goes playing up I just take the other one, And the 85/105/135/180 primes would take care of the reach the 70-200 gives me if that lens acted up.

I hope you get your camera back soon, and in full working order.

Good luck,
Theo

I thought about that.....
One Problem....I can't find the stinkin' RECEIPT!!!!! :troutsmac They said without the receipt I'm sort of up the creek.... :mad2: I have registered it with Nikon when I bought it, but they said I must have the receipt..... :beat:

Ohhh and Melody... I love my new car!   Just have to hide from those cops, while I'm on the road now.....I did get a dirty look from one :police: I passed on the highway the other day...Luckily I was 2 lanes over, and he was stuck between a few trucks :haha: :haha: :haha: . He got off right after we exchanged glances..... :p

I don't buy that receipt garbage I never used mine, it was registered get a supervisor! That lens hasn't even been OUT for 5 years yet, sheesh tell them they are dealing with a female not an idiot and it will get much worse if they don't hop to it!

If nothing else and you don't feel like getting nasty...if you used your credit card the store will have the receipt as well it includes the serial number on the lens.

Gosh how'd they even know your were driving??? Did ya use a pillow? :haha: :haha: :haha: just kidding well sorta! :tongue2: Congrats on the new wheels! :D stay safe.

Thanks Theo,
Yea...I *usually* have my S2 and the other lens packed somewhere in my work van, but I took it out for some stupid reason :troutsmac . It's going back in now!

I am so glad to know it was my gear that was bad, and NOT me! Hmmmmm....OK it's a good excuse, isn't it? I just hope when everything is fixed, I'm happier with my shots! I think my camera has been back focusing from the get go. I guess I learned to compensate for the problem, without realizing it.

The motor going out, does make sense...I had the same trouble with that lens on the S2 & D70. It just never happened as often as it is now doing. I guess the motor was bad from the beginning too.

I brought the lens in a couple times last year, telling them it was occassionally not focusing. They said there was nothing they could find wrong. Hmmmmmm........I also told them it happened on 2 other bodies too. But now that it completely stopped, for a long period of time. I think they thought to look at the motor now. SHEESH! It does work most of the time, but most of the time isn't good enough! :mad2:

Thanks!
Alissa

I can't even imagine having to pay a thousand dollars to have a camera fixed. I think I would just buy another one...lol...

Yea, I know it sounds pretty crazy to pay so much to *fix* the camera & lens, but compared to a new camera and lens, it's a lot less money!

To replace the camera it's approximately $4,300.00 plus replacing the lens is another $1,600.00(+), total $5,900.00, almost 5 grand more. I'll pay around $1,000.00 to fix my present equipment!!!! :woot:

Hopefully by the end of summer, I'll be getting a new camera (to replace my S2)....still working on how to work that out....Do I want to get a D200 for a back up....or to get a D2x(s) to replace my D2x, and put the D2x into back up camera position....Such decisions!!! I definately need another body (camera, that is!) though! I could use a new body myself too! :D

OK...time to go now.......
Alissa...I already miss my D2x....and my favorite lens...... :cry2: :cry2: :cry2:

Sorry to hear about this Alissa , i've got troubles with my D2X buti'm gonna leave it for now (see lense thread).
On the subject of receipts , i always put it in a plastic bag , seal it , stick it in the box with any other assorted items like CD's warrenties , etc , then put them in a cupboard or attic till i either sell the item or need it for other reason , that way as well as having the original packaging i also have all the documentation .

Alissa...I am sorry...I didn't realize it was your D2X that was in the shop...I would be glad to pay the money too to have it fixed. I have a D2X and would do the same.

Hi Brian!
I usually keep really good track of that sort of stuff. Have receipts for EVERYTHING else! Even equipment I don't have anymore! This one just slipped off somewhere. :baldy: Figures! I have the box, and all the packaging for the lens. I can't even find my warrentee card. I did register it though. Unfortunately, according to the repair shop I'd need the receipt, for any warrentee work. Just doesn't seem right. Why bother to register the equipment then? :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

I'll have ot pay for my negligence on this one.... :troutsmac

I just called the repair place. They said the camera is done, and my lens is in a million pieces right now. :woot:

GOOD NEWS......They say I don't need a new auto focus motor!!!!    So the repair won't be nearly as costly as anticipated, although still not cheap, by any means. The camera is about $200.00....Don't know how much the lens will be yet.

I may get them back tomorrow or Friday, for sure! Yey...I get to drive my little race car on the highway again! :dunce:
