Nikon makes, and maybe other lens manufacturers do as well, lenses without aperture rings.

Nikon calls theirs G lenses if I'm not mistaken.

They do not work on older manual Nikons, and probably do not work on all autofocus Nikons either. You need some way of manipulating the aperture setting from the camera body, either through a command dial (dial on the front of the S2, F100, F5, etc.), or maybe with the use of P (Program Mode) on cameras like my trusty non-rusty n8008s which has not front control dial.

Anybody have one of these newer lenses? Anybody use them on older cameras?

Hi Tom,

I'm using two Nikon G lenses with my S2, a 70-300, which I've found to be very sharp and a 28-100, which is good, but not just as sharp. I am also using a 18-35 (AFD) which I find quite stunning.

I have used lenses with an aperture ring, mainly sigma and Nikon's standard 35-70. on my F100, 80's and 70. I found it was quite easy to knock the locking button off and in turn move the aperture ring, which then gave an error message, usually at the worst moment!

The G lenses also have a plastic mount, which may not suit everyone. The optics of these lenses are fine and I have never wanted to use the aperture ring on the other lenses anyway and use the camera's electronics.

The other good thing about the G series is that (being Scot's!) it keeps the cost very reasonable. Also less to go wrong.

Best wishes,

Iain

Hi all!
Just my 1 cents' worth.... I tested the Nikkor 24-85 D series against the 24-85 G series model in the store and the D is definately sharper than the G at all appertures .... for what it's worth.
