Greetings,
I've had the pleasure for just on a month now, of shooting with this combination. Here's the plusses and minuses so far:
Camera: The CR123 battery thing is a pain. I'll get an MB-16 and modify it to the S2, once the warranty runs out. Reviewing images in RAW or TIFF on camera take AGES.............also the plippy little covers for both LCD and USB connection is sad - I'm determined not to lose them.
The good is all it wants to do is take pics. Images straight out the camera, no photoshopping. So easy to use. Makes it all worthwhile, there's no fuss, everything from changing ISO to Auto-Bracketing is dead easy. Shooting ISO 100-1600 allows so much flexibility its SIIIIICK.
Sigma 50-500/4-6.3 lens: The bad point is the one I have has 1mm play between lens/camera.....and Sigma are'nt returning calls to my agent. Apart from that, a great lens. Not super sharp, but good enough for my use. I never have to change lenses therefore no dust. That eliminates one major CCD problem.
So now to sports: here's a sample shot. Continuous focus I rarely use. I tend to "finger" the shutter to maintain focus. This was hand held, not something I'd recommend with this combo - but it is possible. I hold the rig by the lens mount.
So, for the camera, its a 9 out of 10. The lens, its a 7 out of 10, Sigma's after sales drag this down. For sport, the rig gets a 8 out of 10. I was hoping for a 7 so I did pretty well. If Sigma replace this lens, I figure there's no reason the rig won't settle in at a cosy 9 out of 10.
