I have read a lot about using "safe syncs" with hot shoe mounted flashes and powerful studio packs to protect the camera from electrical arcing.

Is it advised or recommended that, for older studio flash packs, you use BOTH a safe sync on the studio pack and a safe sync on the hot shoe at the SAME time? Is this double protection overkill?

Has anyone heard of a safe sync, such as WEIN, FAILING to protect the camera?

I have older model studio flash packs that still work, but I'm concerned about the safety of my cameras.

Using two safe-syncs sounds safe, but I am sure one is enough. I recommend using one. Digital cameras can be sensitive, and flash power packs can have high sync system current.

There is a FAQ thread about flashes and digital cameras, which does talk about the safe sync setup.

I use a safesync gizmo on my Speedotron power pack whenever I use a sync cord. I've been using it with various digital cameras since 1998 or so (Nikon CoolPix 800) without blowing any cameras up. The last few years I have been mainly using a wireless PocketWizard system, so no safesync is needed (and there is no cord to trip over, or get yanked from the camera).

I have never heard of one failing.

Thanks Tom for your answers.

It's helped to put my mind at rest. I enjoy doing studio work, whether it's a job or just for myself, and I never worried about voltage with film cameras, but now I guess it's a different ballgame.
