View Full Version : A second challenge - image editing.

Following on from a thread in the Photos forum, a proposition for another challenge.
It's one we can all set as a challenge, and all respond to ( this could soak up a lot of server space so maybe Shawn may wince at this one :) ).
The challenge is to creatively edit an image in your chosen editor. It'll be another good opportunity to expose and exchange ideas and techniques. The challenger posts a photo in a new thread. The challengees then edit the photo in any way they like and present the result.
Any particularly 'clever' submissions should, at the request of others, be explained with a short tutorial :-)
I think the only restriction I would place is that you can only use the supplied photo - no use of any other images ( sorry guys - no leaping salmon and jetski's :D ).
So wdyt ?
Do we have enough time to run two challenges alonside each other or do we wait until the current challenge has concluded ?
If we want to go with this now, I'm happy to find an image and set the first challenge.
Keith.

Not yet - but I'll spend some time tonight browsing my images folder and picking out a good one.
Not sure whether to submit a nice clean busy image or something more ethereal :p
Such possibilities... ;)

Okidoki,
But I think I still like Timo's, Simon says concept, that way we don't use old pictures but we are challenged to make a new one, and in this case make it a little part of our world.
So thread starter, your Simon.
(We'll check the EXIF for dates and such, so no looking for past great moments. We all want new, new and new.):D

I don't think the first one needs to be new. We can save new for the next one. let's get one up here and get started!

I'll second the second challenge :-)
This will help all of us learn new techniques and help us think in different ways.
Anxiously awaiting the first posting...
(Is it to be in this forum?)

Just try to keep the images under 1 megapixel and upload JPEG compressed images. Actually, the way this server is set up, any images attached to a message don't get counted as using any of my allotted server space. I'm not sure why. Images posted in the gallery do subtract from the available space. ????? I believe the attached images are stored in the database and the images loaded into the gallery are stored as image files and only filename links are stored in the database. So after a while I would expect the database to slow down with all the embedded images. But I don't know for sure. This is my first forum admin attempt. :)
Anyway, have at it! I'll join in for the fun editing too.

i'm up for it too , love mucking about in photoshop, but you'll have to be carefull and make sure both challenge's are well seperated. or like Tom , we'll be putting the wrong pic in the wrong thread.
It's confusing enough as it is, and i understand whats going on!!.
Just a thought but why not put yours in ''Anything Goes' under something like'' altered images'' or something, that way they won't get mixed . but , sorry this is your baby.

Ok. I'll start the challenge off with a not new image - it's one I shot when the camera was new to me and ended up being a present to my partner as a 16" x 8" framed picture.
It's a not very well executed still-life so you may think of this as a 'silk purse from a sows ear' rescue job but then again anything goes !!
Originally shot as a 12mp fine jpeg with most settings off. All I've done is to resize it down which has created some artifacts but this merely adds to the challenge I feel :-)
I think we all fully know that our interests lie in many directions so an image may not enthuse everyone equally. Most of mine are landscapes so I've deliberately chosen an image that isn't. But then the idea here is to unleash the full potential of digital-imaging and hopepully create an arresting image.
I'll post the image as a new thread in the 'Anything Goes' forum.
Let the games commence. Click and play !!
Keith.

These challenges seem like a great way to while away those winter evenings !

This might seem vain, but I'm just curious. I did a reply to the 'Challenge 1' thread and it still shows zero responses.
I really expected to see other responses on that thread also. So I wondered if there is a problem with the thread (thus putting this here instead of the there)

Probably nothing wrong with it anyway. The main display seems to be a little strange today, but the posts still show up...
