Sorry Melody (and others, it's not the 1Ds...)

The New Canon 1D Mark III apparently has been announced last night.

The whitepaper was sent to me late last night and reading through some of the 63 pages, this camera is pretty awesome. However, only 10.1 mega pixel, the 1Ds replacement should satisfy peoples thirst for super high resolution. Although, we'll have to see what that actually ends up being.

The new dust cleaning system has been put in this model, shutter rated at 300,000 cycles, blah blah blah... I'll have to read more, but a "silent mode"?

Speaking of. I'm off to read more... Here's some of the new and improved features.

Here's the news item on dpreview if you thought I was kidding...

And a little bit on engadget.

Here's the Official Canon website on it:
http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eos1dm3/

After looking at some of the sample images, the noise. All I can say is WOW. ISO 800 looks like my 1Ds's ISO 400.

For those who didn't get to see the sample images before Canon's site got nailed, the images all look awesome. The more the day presses on, the busier their site will become and the less likely you'll be able to get to the sample images. :(

This looks to be ideal for my needs - I will be joining the queue!

Any chance of Melody being sent one :D

I find the 14bit processing a huge plus. Should provide much smoother gradations going from somewhere around 4,000 tones to 16,000.

I'm disappointed that this is the second release of the 1D without any updates of the 1Ds. But, if they have all this and the higher resolution in the new 1Ds, it will be one monster of a camera, not that this one isn't.

This might be the signal that kills the rumor of the new 1Ds having the high speed crop mode though too.

The white paper on this Mark III really goes into details about all the new features. If you can't find it on the web (I haven't, but haven't looked very hard cause it was emailed directly to me), send me a PM and your email address and I'll send it to you.

Brian

There's always a chance :tongue2: wouldn't count on anything keeping me silent unless I want to be :D

Hmm...well I was going to say a large jewelry counter, or a auto show...or...nope...ask Howard..I still talk... I like that one and that one and OMG look at that! Hey he loves to take me shopping he says my face and excitement is just like kid in a candy store...I'm just a tad more expensive.

If I ever get back into more sports type stuff this model might interest me, it's doubtful though. Honestly can't see the extra 2fps needed, I always prefered the D2x over the 1dmII and I shot thousands of frames with each.

14 bit? Isn't that fuji territory?

10fps is pretty close to making movies. 3 second movies, but movies none the less.

So is this a full frame camera, or a 1.3x or 1.6x?

I think 10MP is enough for just about anybody. Now that 10MP is pretty standard (well, kind of) I'd like to see better IQ as in DR and noise. Sorry I couldn't find a two letter abbrv for noise :)

It's 1.3x crop, like the whole 1D line (I know, Canon's not your forte... :) )

10fps isn't even halfway to making movies, although, there was a movie produced using the 1D Mark II, but it was shot frame by frame, not 8.5fps style.

My IQ must be a little low tonight... IQ? What's that? They have refined the autofocus and metering, which could translate into a smarter camera.

DR? They have improved it as well as the noise levels. I think the white paper stated something about having 1 stop more range and the noise reduction in the double digic processors has improved quite a bit. Like I mentioned, looking at one of the sample images, the ISO 800 looks like ISO 400 on my 1Ds Mark II where before, ISO 250ish looked like ISO 400 on the 1Ds.

We'll have to see if all of this really pans out in the real world though.

I was hoping for a new 1Ds that would perform similarly to the 1D in terms of frames per second at a much higher resolution ala Nikon's high speed crop, along with more resolution at a reduced speed at more than the current 1Ds resolution. Now I'll probably end up replacing my 1D Mark II and also picking up the new 1Ds when it comes out. I say this now because I originally wanted to use my current 1Ds as a secondary and the new 1Ds as primary, being able to take advantage of some higher speed, but they changed the back controls on the 1D Mark III and I'm sure they'll be doing the same with the new 1Ds.

There is always that other part of the rumor that the new 1Ds will be a smaller body and if that's the case, I don't know what I'll do as I want to keep both my cameras the same functionality-wise.

10fps is close to 1/2 way, which is 12 fps.

1 stop more DR? That would be nice. I would think that 14bit vs 12bit would be 2 stops more, but either way : more is more. And without using more space to store pix!

IQ= Image quality.

The higher ISOs being cleaner is also a nice thing. If you have your money invested in good glass, then you'll see these benefits. And I know you do!

If their silent mode was for those in front of the camera I would buy in a heartbeat...

But, I always wondered when dslr mfg's would do something for those special situations (golf, church, intimate moments--but not as a voyeour[sp?] hopefully :) )

I was kind of thinking that the live preview might be a pre cursor for camera with an electronic shutter... I'm assuming the live preview uses mirror lock up... but seem to remember one of the dslr's not lifting the mirror/prism & light going through it to expose????

You got it. A mirror lockup type of function is used to accomplish this.

This live preview looks very functional. You can not only see what you're going to shoot on the LCD, but if you tether up via USB or use the wireless transmitter, you can do the live preview on a computer screen as well. It would appear that you can use the TV out to do the same thing too.

During all of this, you can magnify 5 or 10x to check focus and use the DOF Preview to see actual depth of fields in real time (not like looking through the viewfinder and seeing a muddy dark looking thing). Many other features to this as well. Those interested in this feature should download the whitepaper and check out page 23.

The Silent mode operation (Page 34)...Not so sure how much this will be of benefit to people. Have to see it when it come out I guess. They slow the mechanism down and so forth to quiet it down, but the whitepaper states 77db normal operation sound and 70db in silent mode. Not much difference. I think the Nikon D2x is already below 70db already. haha.

1D Mark IIn vs. 1D Mark III shutter speed and also at the end, showing off a really nice feature I hadn't read about yet. When you open the door of your card while the camera is reading, most cameras shut off and you lose everything that hasn't been written and possibly screw up your card. The Mark III has a warning when you open the door and continues to write.

Of course, this doesn't prevent the obvious bad thing from happening if you ignore the warning and eject the card anyway. :)
