Ok. With all the hoopla on how loud particular lenses are, I've taken the first step and recorded 4 of my lenses focusing from one end to the other end. I'll hope to add more later. The only one I didn't do was my Nikkor 50-300mm f2.8. It's a manual focus. ;)
All recordings were done the same way, with a mic strapped to the side of the lens, the pickup point just in front of the lens.
Nikkor 60mm F2.8. (http://theswampbbs.com/s2/sound/nikkor60mm.wav)
Noisy little guy now that I actually thought about it. Slow focus from one end to the other. But this IS including the macro range as well.
Nikkor 70-200VR (http://theswampbbs.com/s2/sound/nikkor70-200vr.wav)
Nice and Quiet. Like it should be. Notice the clunking or clicking noises at the begining and end. That's the VR kicking in and out.
Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX ASP DG DF APO (http://theswampbbs.com/s2/sound/sigma24-70.wav)
Another noisy lens, but about the same as the Nikkor 60mm.
Sigma 50-500mm F4~6.3 HSM EX APO ASP RF (http://theswampbbs.com/s2/sound/sigma50-500.wav)
This lens bears the HSM tag and proves itself to be extremely quiet. I don't know why the recording sounds like something inside is rattling. When I listen to it, it's no louder than the 70-200VR.
