S2, like its predecessor the S1, has a proprietary "Super CCD," but the device has increased resolution, with approximately 6 million sensor elements arranged in a honeycomb pattern.

Because the sensors are is arranged along a diagonal rather than a traditional array of rows and columns, each photosite is larger, and gathers more light with improved signal as compared to a traditional arrangement. Also, because of this arrangement the sensor data needs to be interpolated in order to be displayed as a traditional image.

This interpolation process increases the native image resolution to 12 million pixels, but in practice the effective resolution is probably somewhere around what you would expect from a sensor of about 9 million pixels.

The S2 provides the ability to capture images in different modes, including RAW, JPEG and TIFF formats.

Fuji acknowledges that the CCD will require occasional cleaning and provides users with the information on how to accomplish it.

You can always return your camera to Fuji for service and cleaning, but if you are technically minded and very careful, you can accomplish it yourself by following the instructions that ship with the camera

Online info is available here in PDF format (http://www.fujifilmsupport.com/faq/tech/ccd_clean/s2_clean_ccd.pdf)

You will need to purchase Eclipse Optical Solution and Sensor Swabs for cleaning. You will also need an AC adapter to keep the shutter open long enough to clean the CCD.

Don't try to use regular Qtips or other swabs to clean the ccd or you may damage it. Loose material can be sometimes blown out of the camera with a blower bulb, but do not bring the blower brush into contact with the CCD. Usually we'll open the shutter with the camera inverted and blow it out inside a bit with a bulb blower.

Avoid using bottles of compressed air or cleaners in aerosol spray bottles. You can accidentally spray liquid propellent or moisture on the CCD surface.
