Adobe has finally got with it. The new Photoshop CS (8) will be able to open RAW files natively. No more having to deal with propritary software. What took them so long! Planned ship date is the end of November.

Right!

I am very interested in this, except for the fact that it only will work with the latest version(s) of MacOS X.x. I still rely on MacOS 9.2.2 for use with my layout program Quark XPress 4.1.

Since this Photoshop news is a cross platform issue, I didn't want to mention it only in the "Software (Mac)" forum. Those poor PC users will miss out!

Maybe its time you upgrade to 6.0. I did and Quark runs much soother. What do you use Quark for?

ddamko,

I use XPress 4.1 every day for the graphic design portion of my business. I design and produce magazine ads, brochures, catalog covers, sales sheets, packaging, trade show booths, posters, logos, signage, charts, business cards & junk mail. Naturally, whenever photography is needed, I am the first photographer I think about hiring. I have a space in my home office in which I can shoot small products and people.

Clients with just a basic idea find me, and I create a layout, do the photography or illustration, typesetting & layout, and get it ready to go to pre-press or direct to digital printing.

I am not crazy about Quark's new installation and copy-protection limitations with v.6.

I had thought of switching to In-Design, but none of the magazines I deal with use it. I think the industry is still reliant on Quark 3 and 4, with some going to 5. I just forced myself to stop using version 3 at the beginning of 2002.

I have the last dual boot G4 model made, which I start up in 9 every day. It should serve me well for several years - maybe I won't have to update anything.

What do you use Quark for?

Hi Guys,

I too am a designer/photographer and am still using system 9 but have to use 10 every once in a while.

Not sure if you all knew it, but you can open raw files natively in photoshop 7 with the Raw File Plugin.

If you need more info on it, let me know. It works beautifully and seamlessly with Photoshops File Browser.

Welcome Jenbob,
I do use ACR all the time. It just doesn't develop a file quite as good as EX Converter. Hopefully that will change with PS 8. Adobe is actually now claiming that it supports Fuji RAF files. I don't think they made that claim before. It just happened to work.
