View Full Version : Refilling inkjet cartriges?

Hi folks!

OK, I have found the printer of my dreams in the Canon i 9100, so I am increasing the number of prints that I make hence more ink! So, the question of the day for me is:

"I have found several providers that state that ther ink either meets or exceeds the specs for ink in the Canon cartridges. Anybody out there refilling (in my case it is six) inks and getting results that they can depend on and are proud to sell to customers?" I need a company name if you have experience in this area of printing.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Regards,

Roy Cummins

PS At 68 years young, how can I be classified as a "Junior Member"? Just thought I would ask.

hello Roy

It is because of trying to refill inkjet printers that I discovered how much better developed prints are.

I had been dealing with refilling inkjets for about 5 years. To my complete frustration I finally gave up. I've had is work about one out of three tries, at best.

Just trying to give you a little heads up on this venture. The venders say it works, it seems the printer companies do everything they can to make sure it doesn't.

If you have found a printer that makes this easy and works most of the time, please follow up here and let me know. I'll buy one that day.

Thanks for your reply to my question re refilling Canon cartridges. I had the 1280 Epson which had the three ink in one cartridge and refilling those was absolutely a joke. However, I was talking to one of my photo guild buddys here in Houston and he said to go to "Steves' Digicams" website because it had several good ink suppliers listed with links to their sites! I have looked at them and they don't appear to be the old Best Buy refill kits with the accordian injectors which I found to be useless. Look at those sites and tell me what you think?

Again, thanks for your timely reply.

Hi there

I have a Canon s9000 which is similar to the i9100. I spent a small fortune on ink and looked for an alternative to the OEM Canon ink. I tried a couple vendors... what a disaster. Colours were all messed up.

A colleague over at another site turned me onto inkjetgoodies.com (IJG) - for $US 75.00 I got 6x 125mL bottles of ink, 6 empty BCI-6 cartidges, syringes, caps, etc... enough for about 10 refills. They claim that their ink is the exact same colour and viscosity as the Canon stuff.

I am happy to report the IJG ink is just as good as the Canon ink - if not better. I have no idea what the longevity of the prints are with this ink, however, the s9000 is not an archival printer. And it is nice to know my cartridge refills cost me about $1.25 now (as opposed to the $12 I was paying before).

You can buy the starter kit from them with everything you need to get going:

Check it out... I am now a convert!

Take care.

Evening Ballrom Boy!

Thanks for your very valuable input. I went to the website that I referenced above and found that they are the company that I was looking at. I think that I will go ahead and give them a try. I have read most of their customer comments and they sound pleased with the service and product. Your right, $1.25 sure sounds better than $11.95 which I pay here.

Have a good one!

BTW, if you order $75 or more, shipping is free. Just buy an extra set of plugs (or in my case, an extra bottle of photo magenta ink - I go thru a lot of it) and your set.

Good luck - let us know how you make out with the new ink. BTW, I've tried a sample pack of their new Moab papers... just stunning. See this review of them:

Take care!

hi!

i work in printer repair and spare parts import area, and it's nice to hear that you have found good ink, atleast for canon. my experience is that for epson never ever use fill or non original ink
in canon problem is not so hard because prinhead is cheaper to buy than epson
hp will change printhead each time when cartridge is changed

good luck with this refill, please let us know how it goes

Roël,

Thanks for the information about Inkjetgoodies. I ordered a starter set today to see how it works. Will be a great find if the inks are close to Canon's. I also ordered a S9000 today too. I've had a s900 for my wife for a year and she has loved it and the photo output has looked really nice for the price. I got the S9000 for $267 and free shipping, can't beat that for a 13"x19" printer.

I'll let you know how it works out for me ...

Hi All,

As I stated earlier, I am very happy with IJG ink. The Canon s9000 is a great printer for the price - not sure if the Canon OEM ink has special chemistry to keep the print head happy, however, I am halfway thru my ink supply, and if the print head were to clog tommorrow, I have already saved 100's of $$$ in ink. More than enough to replace the print head. But I don't think that will happen anytime soon (BTW, one reason I went the Canon printer route was the user replaceable print head).

I hope you like the IJG ink as much as I do. And when you realize how much $$$ you are saving, you will like it even more!

Take care!

They have very good prices and quick turn around.

And there is my $0.02 worth.

This sounds very good. It is hard for me to make the decision though because I was so frustrated with refilling before.

If I may ask for some more specifics. When you refill, do you put that color cartrige back in right away or maybe wait a while 'because of air bubbles? After refilling do you have to run the head cleaner a half dozen times to get the ink flowing well again?

Thank you
JR

HI CaptJR,

IJG recommends that you wait about 4-6 hours to let the bubbles disipate, however, I have sometimes just let it sit for 15mins with no problem. I find the key to refilling is not to rush the process... take your time with filling the syringes and filling the cartidges. Also, leave a little pocket of air in the cartridge too - this helps quite a bit. The instructions state that you cannot under-fill these cartridges.

Sometimes I run the Canon cleaning utility, however, my s9000 is fairly smart and knows when a new cartridge has been installed, so it cleans the head on its own.

Good luck with this ink... I am a very happy camper.

BTW, IJG customer support is superb - I usually get a response from them the same day.

I'm a little unclear about this sentence. I'm wondering, did they mean 'It's ok to under-fill, because under-filling won't hurt', or you cannot(shouldnot) under-fill? I realize that the previouse advice seems to indicate the 'ok to under-fill', but just thought I'd make sure.
Thank you

Hi again,

In the instructions:

http://inkjetgoodies.com/main/goodies_refill_instructions.htm

they state that a small pocket of air at the top of the ink chamber is required for normal operation of the cartridge. They would rather have you "underfill" the cartridge than "overfill" it.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough about this... let me know if you need more info. BTW, other than spilling a little ink on my hands, this whole process is very easy! The quality of the ink is superb and very cost effective. And no, I don't work for IJG!

Take care!
