Break out those channel mixers and mix down to mono !!!
Any subject goes but extra points for creating an image from something that doesn't normally work in mono ( eg sunsets, flowers.... )
Let the games commence.....

Also, Brian, did you learn on B&W? Your contrast and overall tones show an innate knowledge of what would be good in b&w.

I first started shooting in the late 50's when was about 12, my dad gave me his old box brownie , and i loved it , progressed from there. I still shoot B&W sometimes, and use Ilford delta.
For my shots i just removed the colour , you can de-sat but i only do that if i'm going to colorize afterwards. I have shoot in B&W on the S2 , but if you shoot colour you've got the option of B&W if it's wanted .
Thanks for the compliment but it's proberly luck , i knew the stone jars would look good because i've converted them before ,the other window and the flowers were just hit or miss . But i do like the anti-room in Canterbury Cathedral , it looks great in colour, and i just knew it would look good in B&W as well. just hope you all think so.
Just like to say before i close that this has been a good challenge , some lately have just died , but lets hope we can get some more great pics ,i know i've been greedy and posted 4 , but i might do another couple just for fun .
There's some really good pics in here so lets keep them coming.

Been discussing this with my colleagues, whilst thumbing through a dictionary ( cheating, I know ) ...
Consensus is that monochrome means one colour ( single wavelength of light ) so any colour or single hue is OK. Not sure though that a 'monochrome' image strictly speaking includes white - I would suggest that black to peak amplitude 'colour' is correct.
Purely black and white ( via grey ) is achromatic - as in 'without colour' - usally applied to lenses ( to infer correction for chromatic aberation ) but also means that all ( visible ) wavelengths are visible in the correct proportion to give the sensation of white ( allowing for the eye's auto-white balance ! ).
Not exactly as per common usage ! :)
But enough of semantics - back to the real subject of taking photographs !!

Hey,
I used a Tamron 90mm macro, I once thought 90mm was to short for macro on my 35mm, but with the 1.5x factor of the S2 it's a great focal length now. I also have a pn-11 extension tube that I used alot with my 35mm gear, I oughta dig it out and try some digital shots with it and the Tamron.
The Tamron was a good choice for me at the time I bought it because of the price compared to Nikons 105mm. I have come to appreciate it more, it's a great lens at a great price.

You're a lot closer than you think , the opening scenes from Gladiator supposedly set in a German forest ,were actually shot in a forest in South east england in Surrey. The English Forrestry Commission had to thin out the forest anyway so let Ridley Scott do it for them, (no doubt for a massive amount of money).
My shots were taken a couple of years ago , on the border of Kent/Surrey. so they might actually be part of the same tree belt.
But no conection at all with Lord of the Rings. that honour goes to Steph , who comes from the same part of England (the ribble valley) where Tolkien. named many of the streets and villages in the ''Shire '', apparently he used to walk through the valley when he was a youth.

I've always loved this type of shot but have not been real successful with it. Don't know why, but never thought to use flash. Weird. Here in the UK, we seem to have trouble with autumn and winter - the leaves fall and the trains stop. Snow falls and we all start sliding around the roads bumping into things. We all act surprised as if we'd never seen winter before.
Not the squirrels ! Spotted this one at the weekend ( my partner, and her daughter, were visiting her grandad's grave so I left them to contemplate and went for a walk - big cemetary in Redditch to those who live in the town btw... ).
Lens used was the Nikkor 45mm, f/2.8P. Camera settings were B+W/std/soft, fine 3024jpeg, sunny-WB, iso100 and a green filter on the lens. Exposure was f/5.6 at 1/90s. Image processing - bit of dodging, burning and USM plus a hint of tint.
The shot was a bit hurried - he was watching me very nervously. I got one more shot a bit closer ( he'd started to move ) but then he ran off. This one has the best pose though.
A longer lens would have been good - doh :)

Will definitely take your advice, Brian.....
I remember your post wherein you said how you wished you were able to photograph your kids at their formative years....
Thanks to the digital age..... no need to run to the photo store and labs for films.... :D :p

OK I don't have my S2 YET. But it's coming soon I hope. Meanwhile I thought I'd post one I took with my 602, I like B&W. Comments, criticism, etc welcome.

OK Duane, now it does'nt quite work for me ,there's too much empty space on the left, but i can see a good image in their, hope you don't mind , i've done a crop, a bit of dodging and burning, it proberby looked good in colour but for me foliage does'nt convert to well. as i said hope you don't mind . aalso i'm doing this on my laptop and sometimes the contrast does'nt come out as mean it too , it was a quick fix, i'll look a little closer when i get in on my desktop.

Thanks Brian, I don't mind at all. What I was going for with the empty space to the left was the contast of the bright sunlight on the face of the cliff to the shadows on the left side. I really didn't capture the effect I was going for. It would make more sense if you saw the scene live. On the left, some of the rocks hidden in the shadow almost looked like they had their own illumination.

Duane how many times have we all taken great shots ,got them home and sensed a feeling of anti-climax , none of our shots have the same effect on print as they do live , i'll bet all of swampys sunset shots were twice as good ''live''.
Thanks for understanding the reason for my changes.
Brian.

Brian,
just had to respond to this shot, love it, would look great framed,
I wonder how many people actually produce photo decor from their work?
There is enough great material on this forum for a Fuji calendar...
maybe even a "S2Pro.com" calendar :)

Thank you Serge, the idea of taking pictures is always to see them in print , oh it's nice and conveinient to view them on your monitor, but print should always be their final destination.
on the whole i try to print out at least one 8x10 from a days shoot , but only if it's good enough :) .
But as Linda G laments ''so many prints , so little wallspace''.
This B&W thread has given me and many others the chance to go back to our roots and look at shots in a different way , Light and Form .and for that i thank Keith M .
And as an old pro (if you'll forgive the expression) i value your comments a lot .Thank you.

I used to have a great opportunity for sharing my photographs when I was a newspaper photographer. We were a small enough city that there wasn't that much hard news to capture on film (although there were three, one major, train derailments the year I was on the job) so I had to find stuff and some of it was fun stuff that would get orders for reprints.
No, I got none of the money, but I did get a feeling of making someone happy.
I am getting ready now, for my first gallery show and I find I'm lost! I've waited way too long in my life to narrow down all my images to 20. I have no guidelines other than the area will hold 20 16x20s and I can put in smaller ones in that same space, just please fill it. AARRRGGG!!!
http://members.cox.net/gallerychoices/selection/index.htm
that is a page where I put a 'few' of them I wasn't sure about. Any comments are very welcome! Many are not even cropped, but just corrected and posted.
I love seeing emotions from others as they view something I've tried to capture and my husband is having a showing at the local nature preserve next spring.
We are working on projects brought back from our trip to Romania, including a calendar for the school we spent time in...a sports school with many talented atheletes!!
Well, off to PhotoShop!
Thanks for listening to ME ramble and I'll try to find something to post later to keep it in the monochrome sphere.

Hello Linda,
I have just looked at your on-line gallery, very nice.
My choice out of many, include the leaning snow clad trees and the shot of the barn next to it. Also the sombre rendition of the trees with dappled light on the forest floor. There are many thematic possibilities there.
I always find it difficult to edit my own work, we get too close, and
it becomes hard to be objective.
After entering the Nikon Photo Contest International for many years, I finally managed a 3rd prize on my ninth attempt with one of five entries, the one I least expected the judges to choose...
go figure..

I'm about edited out! Over a thousand images from our trip, gotta get some written to cd for the people we met there plus a calendar for the school we photographed and normal, hectic life.
Here's an image taken somewhere from the train window in the heart of Romania.

I've often thought about how to go about showing prints, and what would happen if I were limited to space. I've thought of showing some prints as prints, and having a slideshow going with lots of other prints with a "catalog" number imbedded on the print where people could make an order for one they saw on the screen. It's a long shot, but it's more exposure.

A client wanted a photograph that looked like a pencil-drawn image so that it would match the other artwork in his publication. I think the main reason for this type of images is the fact that they photocopy pretty well, unlike photographs. Anyway. I thought it turned out pretty well. Comments?

I'd say it turned out great! Is this an auto thing in Photshop or did you have to hold it by the hand?

It's mostly auto... I converted to grayscale, then selected the "Poster Edges" preset under Artistic on the Colored Pencil FIlter in Photoshop CS. CS has tons of filters that PS7 doesn't have. I'm having fun with all the new tools. Then I adjusted the contrast to get blacker blacks and whiter whites, like a drawing. :)

Nicely done Shawn, you can get almost the same using 'Elements 'but it takes an awfull lot of laterial thinking as well as the limited filters in 'Elements'. might just have to order CS now.
While on the subject of B & W has their been enough interest shown to justify a seperate forum.? i think there just might be.
(although i've just about run out of shots to post):D .

Brian,
I really like the first one better for its cleaner
"classical" look, the thing with framing a shot as you have done there is, is to achieve the right balance. Thats what I tell my students anyway, and have to apply to myself in constant re-editing :D
...and Linda,
if thats a "grab" shot from a train, then to coin a Cartier Bresson expression...
you have captured the DECISIVE MOMENT!
it speaks heaps... very poignant, and B/W is definitely the correct choice of medium.
(at the risk of sounding opinionated)

Must agree Serge the first one is the better one out of all the ones taken that day , thought i'd throw in the other one as a filler . lesson here is ''just enough and no more''.:) .
What i really want to know is. why you're indoors and not out in rain watching England wallop your lot at rugby today.:D :D .
I'll be watching the World cup final on TV . first time i've seen Sydney in the rain , Bondi beach looks like any English beach today.
Maybe you're not a sports fan , and i might be eating my words in a few hours time .(would'nt be the first time).
For our American friends Rugby is american football but without all the protective gear.

but my wife will watch it under sufference, so just she can talk to them about the game
... but yeah its a rainy "english" evening here tonight...lets see what happens

When visiting Hamburg last April, we were treated to a pro soccer game. I've seen rugby, and there was a small, thrown together league around a few years ago, but it didn't survive, I'm afraid.
My husband's on his way to see the Kansas U vs Iowa State football game today. Silly guy, it's going to be COLD! I am going to be processing images from our trip. Another day in front of a computer.
Here's another quick shot of a guy in Deva, Romania, selling local pottery, woodwork and textiles at the market. I was about the only tourist there and he obliged by coming back out so I could photograph him. It's really colorful, but all the textures translate to B&W well.

Well we got our wish Ron , lets hope we can now do it justice .
I'm going to have to shot some fresh ones , most of mine have been taken up in the ''challenge'' section.
I'll proberbly still shoot on colour then convert as that will give me more options.
But i might shoot B&W in camera, to see if the S2 or a PS convert is different .
Its wet and windy here today , so i might go out ,and try and emulate some B&W high ISO moody shots , but then i might stay in and keep warm , but the dogs tails wagging , so it's photo time:D

Hmmmm , interesting refereeing decisions .
When i was younger i played county cricket at at 'B' level . I hired this Aussie driver about 8 years ago , and he found out and really gave me some stick when you won the Ashes.
Now normally i can give and take , but it got so nasty and out of hand both with me and the other drivers , that for the first and last time in my life i let personalities rule my decision to let him go.
So you'll forgive me if i have a little smile to myself today.
