Ok, I've read about all the post on the Metz 54MZ-4 and Nikon SB-80DX. Is anyone happy with the SB 80? I have a chance to get one at a really great price but will it really be worth the discount?

OK I will put my vote in for the Metz. I would think this poll would show many more people using the SB80 over the Metz. Not because the SB80 is better, but because many of us, myself included thought the SDB80 or other Nikon was best. The Metz for me was a after thought a while back, turns out using the two side by side there is no compairison. The Metz is far more consistant than the Nikon. In A mode, TTL or manual the Metz will take a good shot. While the Metz is a 1000% improvment there are still times the TTL is not what it should be. This should be interesting. Good Luck

I went with the metz. However, this is based off of comments I've read here and my experience with my own MZ3 (not the MZ4). I'm very happy with the results from the MZ3 and I've used it along side a SB-80DX and still liked the Metz better. If I had to buy another flash, it would be the MZ4.

Well, of all the folks how have looked at this post, only 4 of them have flash units at all :)
I think I'm sold on the metz but I'm having trouble finding them online. The only source I've come up with so far is Tri-State and I really would like to shop around a little more. Any suggestions?

I might have to wait till after Xmas. I've spent a lot of money lately!! :)
Thom Hogan should add a Metz section to his book!

I have an old SB-24 that still works well enough for the times I need it- I've been looking at the Metz though.

I have a cheapy Quantaray PZ1-DSZ flash. Worked great with the N80 and seems to experience the same problems that some users report with their S2's. I'm with Frank in that I've spent too much money lately on gear (is that possible?). So, after the holidays have mellowed out I will peruse the forums in search of the most compatible flash with the S2 (read TTL).

My 54-4 is on the way. I emailed Thom about adding a Metz section to his work. Let's just say, he is way too busy! I understand, he is into quality, not quantity!

Frank,
I'm interested in the Metz flash you ordered.
Can you post a photo or two after you get it and give us your thoughts on this unit?
Thanks,
Scott

I don't have a particular preference eitherway, when I bought my 80DX it was because of the advice of my local photostore guy.
I'm happy with my 80DX and don't have any experience with the Metz, so I'm not much help with the comparison.
I haven't used it much but when I did the results were more then satisfactory.

You will like the Metz a lot, it is way ahead of the SB80. After useing the Metz the SB80 is a back up anymore. TTL is much better in TTL, A mode or even in manual.
