Hi,

I posted this at Nikonians but no replies so thought I would post it here.

So the AF assist illuminator on the S2 only works with the on camera flash, but when I attach my SB-28 from what I read in the manual it should have it's own AF assist illuminator but I can't get it to work on my S2, does the SB-28 AF assist illuminator work with the S2?

Thanks heaps,
Rachel.

Rachel, Have you used this flash on ther Nikon cameras? I have used my SB-28 (not a DX) without a hitch, however, the SB 28 is fussy. According to pg 81 of the manual, the AF assist will only activate if ALL of the following conditions are met:

1: The subject is sufficiently dark and within 8m. I personally have found mine to work at much greater distances.

2: Only Nikon lenses are used (I have also found this forgiving of my Tamron lenses.

3: The Autofocus is set to single servo AF

4: Focus lock is not employed

5: The SB ready light is on.

Whew, that is a lot of conditions. You can verify if it is working by going into a totally dark room and point it at a blank wall. You can see the focus assist as a dark red pattern. If all else fails, it may be time for a repair.

I hope this helps,
Jim

The only problem is when I attach the light to a Stroboframe Quick Flip and the red focus assist light is aimed a little high at close distances.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help. I just tried the SB-28 on my F100 and the AF assist light is not working on that either. I am doing everything on that list so I think something is wrong with the flash. But I'll try it out better tonight when it gets dard as I was only able to go into a cupboard to test it out (daytime here).

Thanks again,
Rachel.

Thanks but I have all that selected and it still won't work. I am using all Nikkor prime lenses so no problem there. I think there may be something wrong with my SB-28.

Thanks heaps,
Rachel.

I have the SB25, it seems to work fine in TTL mode on my S2. From what I have been reading the SB28 doesn't work in TTL on S2, is this correct? Why? Thanks
