View Full Version : Here's one case an SLR would help

Just trying to pass the time until I get my S2. I'm thinking I will end up going the used route. A local pro that I have done some computer and networking work for has a used one that he is looking to sell. I know he takes good care of his equipment, and this one is just back from a cleaning and PM from Fuji. I've played around with it, done some focus tests and all looks well. Going to be a hard deal to pass up. This weekend I hope!
Anyway I was a little bored, so I put together some shots of the moon that I took during the recent eclipse. I used a TCON 1.7 teleconverter on my 602. This just seems to me to be an example where an SLR would have helped, but I will admit the lens that I would need would probably cost twice what my 602 did.

How would an SLR been of any help? Good looking shots there and you pieced them all together.... I did a similar thing, I had an SLR and I still had to piece them all together.... hehe Good shots though.

I did the eclipse a year or two ago using my 4900zoom.... very similar results - getting the exposure right was the tricky bit.
Only problem I had was that it was so cold I had to take the battery out between shots and keep it somewhere warm :)

Swampy,
My thinking was that with an SLR, I could have selected a longer zoom, and I wouldn't have had to use the teleconverter, which results in considerable CA that I have to deal with in Photoshop. And then there is the larger CCD, and the availability of higher ISO's and lower noise levels.
I was doing this with my 10 year old niece, and we made a large print for her to take to school, where they were talking about why the eclipse occurs, etc.
At any rate apparently her teacher was impressed, (non photographers are so easy :D ), and my niece really likes the print.
Keith,
I've never used a 4900, but I know some people who have them and like them, and do good work with them. And yes it was cold, but luckily I had a clear shot from my driveway, and we were able to go back inside between shots.

Don't know if you caught this thread. Live and I both posted our series on it. Mine was from the one back in May though cause I was clouded over for this last one.

Similar to you, I had my son with me. Took the pictures from 7:30pm until 11:30pm from the roof of my 3 story office building. Afterwards, went to my office, printed out a few from begining to end and he took them to school and got extra credit in Science.
By putting the teleconverted on your non-slr camera, in essence, you accomplished one of your goals of using an slr. :) Too bad for the CA though. Having a longer lens certainly would have helped, but, as I said, yours came out pretty good.

Nice composition.
I like it how it shows the progression of the eclipse.

OK, what the heck is CA? I know it's got to be obvious, but hey, its been a long day.
Lets see, something teleconverters do, but PhotoShop can fix? I give.

Ah, right - I knew that, it just wasn't coming last night.
Thanks,
Tony
