I own or owned the following lenses and believe that the Tamron 28-75 2.8 DI is the best, in term of sharpness.
Nikon AF 35-70 2.8 (non D)
Sigma AF 24-70 2.8 Ex something something
Sigma AF 28-70 2.8 Ex something something
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F/2.8 XR DI LD Aspherical (IF) Macro
I have also tried the Nikon AFS 28-70 2.8 ED, and believe the Tamron is sharper. The Tamron, however, can't match the focusing speed of the AFS, or the color rendered by the AFS's ED glass. Additionally, the Tamron's plastic construction makes it looks and feels like ... yes... a cheap plastic lense, but that is what one should expect from a $300 lense.
