Has anyone tried using a Vivitar 5000 or 6000af ring flash on an S2?

I was looking for an inexpensive ringflash and saw the Vivitars, which do not have cords for my Quantum Turbo. I've seen the Sunpak DX12, but with modules, cords, and adapter rings, the cost is $300...pricey for a novelty gadget.
Does anyone have an opinion about either unit?

For $350 to $390 you can buy SB-29S Speedlight Dedicated TTL Shoe Mount / Ringlight Flash.
Can't use it on the D1x, D100 for TTL, but on S2, it's fine :D

Yes it has a modual that comes off it...I think I payed a little extra for that but was worth it well and truely...Im not sure what you would pay for this where you are Im in NZ and everything is expensive to do with cameras...but if I remember at the time I was pleasantly suprised just how reasonable it was...I was useing a F4 at the time...good luck

Yes, the Sunpak flashes can be Nikon-dedicated by using a TTL module.
It works very well for me so far - be aware that this flash doesn't have too much range, it's really designed specifically for macro work, so it's not a good general-purpose flash unit.

I believe that Sunpak makes two Nikon modules. One is designed for the F3, the other should work with all other Nikon bodies including the S2.

I have bought a S2 last week and have ask to Vivitar site if the 6000AF is compatible with the S2 and the 60mm 2.8 Micro/Nikkor AF.
The answer has been:NO.
The Micro Nikkor diam/filter is 62mm; the Vivitar hole is sufficiently large ?

The Vivitar comes with adapters for up to 58mm filter threads. However, you can by step-down rings that will allow you to attach to a 62mm filter thread.
This would normally cause vignetting on 35mm, but should be OK with the S2's narrower angle of view.

Buy it from www.7dayshop.com - £65.90 including delivery!!! They also have a 30-day money back policy.
I checked and the flash has a 52mm thread, and comes with adapters (step-up, step-down rings) from 49mm to 58mm.
So you'll need an adapter to go from 62mm down to 58mm used inconjunction with the 58-52mm one supplied (I can't find anywhere that does a 52-62mm adapter). This is going to intrude 5mm in from the 62mm lens filter thread, so why not stick a little bit of black tape on your filter thread, and check to see if you get vignetting?
Minor vignetting can always be cropped out.
The step-up/down rings are only £3.99 each at Jessops BTW.
Cheers
Tim
PS Whereabout in the UK are you?

Thank you very much Tim, for your gentleness.
I am waiting for my Micro Nikkor.
When it arrives I will try your suggestion of the tape.
I'm italian and live in North Yorkshire from 1997, but need the help of a dictionary yet, to write in english!

I use an old ELICAR Ringflash which has two auto controlled f stops at 100ISO f16, f8 which I have had for years.
It has a maximum ring size of 58mm but I use a step down ring 62mm++> on my Nikkor 60mm. It gives good results. Just set camera on Manual, ISO=100, lens to f16 and shutter speed to 1/125 and shoot away.
I guess it is a similar design to the Vivitar.
In fact looking at the instructions it is a DOI unit that has been rebadged by ELICAR.

Thanks jknights.
I believe that the CENTON MR40 ring flash, sold by Jessops for £99.90, is in reality the Vivitar 6000 AF, sold by 7Dayshop.com for £65.00.....!
They seem the same product.
