Shot this picture this afternoon in the studio. Her mother hand crafted everything in the picture. Next spring we are going to shoot a series outside her mothers tee pee.

Just so you can see the detail in the dress. It's really fun taking pictures for this family.

Her mother does great work. Yours ain't bad either, Wayne.:)

I can see where this would be enjoyable to shoot. Speaking for my own two cents and a half I would ask the young lady to do away with the makeup in order to keep the spirit of the shot. Then again it might just be the Cherokee in me.:)

Beautiful pictures, the color one is definitely more attractive.

kwe' - i agree with ron on the make-up issue - just a note - many american indian people - use a bear - grease (mimey) to darken and bring emphasis to the red shade in the hair - might be nice to produce the effect somehow since you have gone to all the trouble of using native regalia - it is a good thing to see many tribal origins represented in her clothing and cradleboard - wanashee - husawis

Like all Cherokee people there is a godd portion of English in their background also. We were also shooting the shots that they wanted. Check out my avitar. I am also Cherokee with a little Creek mixed in with my Norman English and Irish. I would have removed the makeup and braided her hair. But this is how she looks and it captures her personality pretty well. Her mother poses a lot of the pictures that we take of the family. She is very creative and could be considered a true artist in everything she does..

Marvelous work!

Do they participate in the local Indian Museum? I love going to the events there.

Adding my rave...very beautiful. I want to go to a PowWow and capture some of the beautiful colors and faces. I've always loved Native American culture.

Great shots Wayne. I was confused about the makeup too but then read your response. The only technical comment I would make, and it's petty; would be to clone in a little more of the blue backdrop near her forehead on the color shot. The white feather tone seems to detract from her face.

Wayne,

Can't wait to see the shots in a more native environment. Nice work.

Ho wa! Dto hi tsu?

I noticed you are in Germany. The story, as far as we can tell, is that two German brothers with the surname Risner came to the U.S. a long time ago and married the two daughters of a Cherokee Chief. Other members of my family have traced us to the point the brothers married the chief's daughters. We have found, through the years, that if someone has the last name spelled as they did, 'Risner', then we are related.

Great detail in dress and her features, I wounder if more earthy colours in background with a bit more dramatic lighting focusing on her being would do her more justice. Her beauty and integrity stands on her own... Just a though.... Looking to see more

Beautiful shots! I am very impressed with how you captured the overall beauty of the young lady and the amazing detail of native costume. the b&w shot is stunning.

We used a light box and a SB-24 on the camera pointed straight up with a stofen difusser. The camera was set to manual 1/60, F-16, and ISO 200. The picture indicated f-13 but I am pretty sure that I has the camera set to F-16. All the other pictures say F-16. The picture was shot in color and desaturated in PhotoShop. Very little was otherwise done to the picture.

Hello,
I am not sure if you have a directional grid in the soft box or if you have barn doors on the soft box, but this may give you better modeling and separation from background. Have 3 or 4' reflector on Right side of her to kick in some light on her r.side and back. Softer separation of background from her figure and she wold be ready to step out of picture. Small spot light to streak across the back ground..I guess I have some of the great shots from Edward Curtis stuck in my memory banks. What a great choice of subject. Could you shoot some close ups of her face, neckline and shoulders.....?

We might take some more pictures later in the spring. I also posted a picture of her sister dancing at a recent pow wow. And by the way I found out the girl is Lakota.
