Hi,
I can by a beautiful second hand 35-70 2.8 Nikon. The lens was focusing just from 35 to 40. After the 40mm there was no reaction in focusing.
Is there so much difference between a ‘D’ lens and a non ‘D’?
With kind regards.
Miel

I have a Nikkor 35-70 ƒ2.8 AF-D. I have had it for about 10 years without problems. I like the lens because the aperture remains constant as you zoom, which makes manual exposure much easier, and makes shooting with non-automatic studio strobes practical.
The lens should focus in automatic mode from 35mm to 70mm smoothly. In Macro mode, which is accessible only at 35mm, focus is manual only.
"D" technology transfers the distance information from the lens to the camera for enhanced TTL flash metering with D-capable flash units. When the camera/flash understands the subject distance, it can more accurately determine a correct exposure.
If the lens only focuses between 35mm & 40mm, the lens is broken and I would steer clear. I would guess that it would cost well over $150 to fix, if it can be fixed. I would not risk damaging the camera with a faulty lens.
