I'm trying various paper out with my Canon 990i printer (very similar to the i960).

I'm surprised how different prints on various paper can look.

I have tried the following so far:

Canon Pro Glossy Photo Paper
Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper
Fuji Glossy Film
Pictorico Glossy Film

I printed the same image at the same highest quality setting in the driver on each of the papers. The following is my (highly subjective) opinion...

I am a big fan of Cibachrome and prefer the glossy films. However, the Fuji glossy film produced the worst results. The print looked dull and flat with a dark grey black. So bad in fact that I checked that I had printed on the right side of the paper!

The Canon pro paper surprisingly was the next worst, having a muddy black. The Epson paper was better, having a deeper black and generally looking clearer because of this. Neural greys were a bit yellow though, and in general the Canon's colors seemed more saturated.

The print on Pictorico film was outstanding. Better than the rest by a large margin. The image jumps out at you in 3d-o-vision rather like a Cibachrome print.

Others I have shown the prints to generally agree, though some prefered the Canon print over the Epson.

The Pictorico film is very expensive though. I would be interested to know other peoples findings.

What's the best?

I own the Canon S9000 for some time now and tested several papers on it.

Besides the Epson Premium I love and - prefer now - Ilford Galerie Classic paper (in pearl for me).

It prints very nice, has a great tonality and is dirt cheap (I pay 96 bucks for 250 8.5x11 sheets).
It only takes a while until it is really dry.

You can download profiles from Ilford.

I too have been using the Ilford Classic Pearl and Smooth Gloss Pearl papers with HP7960 and Epson 3000 printers for some time. These papers have been very satisfactory, very cost effective and far superior to any of the Canon, Epson, HP or Legion papers that I have experimented with...good color, great contrast, quick drying time, beautiful finish.

Office Depot glossy comes out very well on the 9000 and it is very cheap. Ilford Gallerie Classic Pearl also looks very good.
