What is the difference between a G and a D model? Apart from the price, what are the benefits of buying the D model? According to the manual they are both compatible with the best metering on the S2, so why pay more?

I'm new to this, so please be gentle :)

Hi,

A D lens is capable of sending distance information back to the camera. This can then help the camera with metering.. this is useful when flash is involved, since in this case distance to the subject is critical.

However, my S2 seems to meter flash well for me even without this distance info.

Andy.

P.S. I don't have either of these lenses, but I noticed this in an earlier thread.

24-85 AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 24-85mm f/2.5-4.5G IF

Wow, what a mouthful!

AF - means autofocus
-S - means silent wave motor (ultrasonic focus)
ED - means one or more "extra low dispersion" elements
G** - means it has no aperture ring
IF - means internal focusing mechanism

**BTW, this G lens also transmits distance information to support 3D matrix metering & 3D Multi-sensor balanced fill flash on cameras that support it. This is documented in the lens manual, and supposedly (Distance info) is true of all G lenses currently manufactured, so you could say G lens is a D lens, but who knows if there will be exceptions in future models?

Personally, based on my sample of exactly one, I think this is a fine lens. They should bundle it with the camera, and it would put an end to a lot of the complaints.

Regards,

Matt

Thank you for the replies. As a beginner I will stick with the G models for the time being. It would appear that they metre light the same way, but no apeture ring and perhaps slightly better glass on the D. Not worth the extra money at my level of competance yet :)

According to the Nikon people in Australia the optics in the 24-85 G and D lens are the same.

In the G lens you donot get the aperture ring and the build construction is not heavy duty.
