Just replaced my old IBM 1Gb microdrive with the new Lexar 1Gb CF card. It's 3.6 mb/s, not top speed but still VERY fast. I had constant "card not initialized" with my old MD, now they totaly gone! Works very fast and smooth. Besides when I turn the camera on it initializes in 1/2 second compared to 2-3 sec. with microdrive.
Recommend to all! Bought it on ebay for $187.

I've got three microdrives and haven't had any problems with them, but only one is fairly old- I can't tell which one though. I find that's about enough storage for two days of shooting, though I've got a portable drive to copy to. I might get some 1G CF cards (got a few 256M's) eventually, as I'm concerned about ending up somewhere relatively high, and the 12,000 foot ceiling on Microdrives worries me a bit.

Hopefully the prices keep dropping while I'm holding off :)
