Finally got a chance to make this test and compile the results together. Have a look and make your conclusions :)

Hi Igor,

The shots with the 300/2.8 + 2x TC really impressed me... they are quite sharp (except for the f/11 one). That is quite a lens!

At 400mm (equivalent with TC) the 70-200VR seemed more consistent than the 80-400VR at all aperatures... hmmm.... is it just me?

Overall, the 80-400VR didn't impress me. What are your impressions?

Thanks for doing this test.

Glad you found this test useful. I also did.
The main conclusion is AF 300mm f2.8 is really much better. Both alone and with the TC.
The "secondary" (but not the least) conclusion I made for myself is I need to do something with tripod/camera shake. It is very sensitive at 600mm and up. No wonder, as camera (lens) is attached at only one point. There should be at least two to fix it. Will work on this........

Hi Igor

interesting test with the x2 kenko & 80-400 VR.
shame that some images have camera shake, does the VR and auto focus work with the converter attached? and were you using them

I'm still testing my VR 80-400 and have got some great hand held shots (pin sharp hand held at 1/60sec on 400mm =600mm on the S2) but I find the VR does not seem to work very well when using a tripod. posted a nuthatch pic for Gary to day see what you think!!

When Ive tried x2 converters I have had to focus manually!! but the VR seems to work.

I have some non nikon teleplus extension tubes and the VR works great as a macro lens-pin sharp or what. at f8 f11 quality is brill!!
