Hi everyone,
I'm looking into getting a Apple G5 1.8ghz and have the option of
getting a like new single processor for $1400. I know the new G5 1.8's
come with dual processors, but money's an issue in this case. Is
it worth the extra grand to get the 1.8ghz dual processor. I'll
be using the system primarily to download images from my S2 and
file prep for my clients and general workflow stuff. I work
normally with files no larger than 70megs.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Stan

Oki...
I'll give you a past scenario, I used to own a dual 500 and did a fair amount of video editing, its good to have the two processors when you render video, the machine uses one brain to render and you can use the other to keep working.
I now have a single 1.6GHZ G5 and its a fast thing I kid you not. Any photo editing or minor rendering is done in a heart beat and I do not miss the dual, but I would have concidered to get one if I fealt that video was the 1 thing I would be doing...
So I would like to advice you to get a single and add 512MB in ram...

Either one is an awesom unit!
70 MB or 140 MB files will go through either one faster than you can type. I frequently slop around with 200 or 300 MB files with my G4 533 mHz or my G4 dual 866 mHz and am quite happy with the speed.
I say get the smaller system, and load it with ram.
( I find www.otherworldcomputing.com a great source for RAM and Mac upgrades and externals.)

Stan ,
different view , i will go with the dual . I got the single 933 and wish that I had gotten the dual 1Ghz instead ( for video editing ) ..

Thanks for feedback. BTW, Oki, is that a McDonalds wrapper on the table behind in your posted image?

If you're not doing video work, go for the single processor and load 'er up with RAM and a big hard drive. In Photoshop, RAM is king.

I love In-N-Out. To bad, when I was in Lost Wages last year, they were closed.
