View Full Version : EXIF Data

Please correct me if I am wrong. I have been using Photoshop CS exclusively to bring in RAW images and when the final save is made I use "save as" (I save as a jpeg). At this point for whatever reason I seem to have lost most (not all) of my exif data. The one that particularly bugs me right now is losing the lens (length) information. Am I doing something wrong?

Hey Pauly,
Saving as a jpg strips the exif data. I thought that PSCS was supposed to fix that but I guess not. Why not save as a TIF, hard drive space is cheap as are cdr's. It would be nice to have the data embedded in the images we post on here though.

Mike, yes. I suppose I could save as a TIFF. I think what got me saving as a jpeg was the recommendation of the lab (Meijer) that processes my images as prints.

I was looking at one of swampys post in lens tests and it had the exif data, maybe he took it has a jpg so the data was not lost. I want to shoot in raw but want to save that info for web posting. ANy ideas or workaround?

Actually in Photoshop, if you use the "Save for Web" feature you loose all EXIF Data, but if you just do a "Save As > Jpeg" all your data stays in tact.

OK, I open a RAW file, do what ever... resize, sharpen then save as but the only options i get are Tiff,PSD,PNG,PDF,CIN etc, no jpeg. This has got to be a stupid question but do I have to save as a TIFF before I can save has a jpeg?

Yes this is right.
I would be really upset if I lost the data from my JPGs and I would go completely bananas if it messed my NEF/RAF files.
PS-CS does not lose the data if as Mike (Crabby) says you save as JPG.

I use PS 7, and PS CS. I do all my work and save it as a .tif or .psd. When I have an image I want printed out at a consumer lab (Meijer, Walgreens, etc.), I create and save a new file, 4" x 6" (or whatever size you need) @300 dpi, and RGB. I have not found the minilab printers to be able to print RAW files. I did find a Walgreen's that could print the 35mb tiffs right from the CF card. It also will print grayscale images in a chopped up solarized way. If you have a grayscale image to print, convert it to RGB first.
You probably could save the 4 x 6 jpg files at resolutions down to 200 dpi and get good results.
Some minilabs print on Fuji Crystal Archive paper, others print on some sort of inkjet / sub paper. I prefer the Fuji Crystal Archive paper. The minilabs that print your digital files to the same printer that they send traditional negative-based, use real photo paper. The minilabs that print your digital files to a printer housed in the base of the kiosk use non-photo paper (inkjet or dy sublimation?).
