Good day everyone,
This is my very first post, so bear with me. My problem is with trying to print an 8 by 10 image from photoshop or my default printing software. I'm shooting at 2848/4256 resolution. Would this ratio create a true 8 by 10 image. If i'm shooting vertical I will lose nearly the top third of my image in the print preview in PS. I'm using the HP 952c printer and i'm thinking this might be the culprit. I hear about having to check for max print size and centering which I think my printer does not have. Could this be the problem?? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you

I think your problem is that you're not aware of the actual size our cameras put out. If you were to resize our straight resolution pictures down, the final size would be 8x12. So you'll have to compensate for that when you're shooting the pictures. Make sure you don't have anything you want to keep on the sides for printing.

Does this help?

Thanks so much Swampy.
That was going to be my next alternative. Its going to be quite difficult now to that (fill the frame) theory of shooting.

Hi Johnny,

I've read similar questions in other forums about printing size and the required pixel count or setting required to obtain high quality prints?

The information that follows was mention by two different individuals who are both well respected, Claude Jodin who writes for PPofA [Professional Photographers of America magazine] and Gary Fong a professional photographer and lab owner, if I'm correct.

The setting you mentioned would produce a 12 megapixel image which, if properly exposed and sharp could be enlarged to approximately 120" x 80" 's. Read on for verification!

Claude Jodin, discussing wide format Epson printers said he has a friend who shoots at six [6] megapixels all the time and routinely makes prints that are 44" x 66" and they are gorgeous, to quote Claude! This is what I based my statement in the beginning on.

The article is at, ' digitalphotographers.net ' in the forum look down the list for Professor Pixel/ Claude Jodin and then find a post entitled, ' What is the largest print I can make out of a 3024 on Fine mode in jpg file for Fuji S2 Pro? ' May 19, 2003, by Kurty.

Gary Fong has also stated that large size files or pixel counts are not required for prints up to 20 x 24" 's!

I can also verify this as after a bit of time with my S2 I started shooting at a, 'Fine JPG' setting and a pixel count of 2304x1536 which give me a 3.5 megapixel file size and by mistake blew up only the central portion 1/4 of the image to more than fill an 8x10 print. So from that experience and these articles I believe should easily be able to make a 20x24 print from a 3.5 meg file.

Just print to fit the paper, you'll have some white space left over on the paper, but you can trim that off with a paper cutter or some scissors. Alternately, you can get longer paper if your printer will accept it (not sure about the HPs, my Epson will allow me to feed longer paper, or roll paper through the back.
