View Full Version : More Rumours For S2 Replacment!

I read in Jan 2004 Total Digital Photography about some info on Fuji's next SLR. It claims to expect a full frame sensor and an 11 effective mega pixal output. I guess that means interpolated up to 22 in fuji's case!
Evidently an announcement is due in Feb!

Steve, no doubt it's coming!!! :)
I must stop buying lenses and start saving for the S3 :)

Igor,
Well, it depends how much better this new machine will be. You might be better off investing in new lenses, who knows!!
I dont really need a camera that gives more resolution. For me a greater dynamic range would be more useful which would save time in Photshop. The next generation CCD will no doubt address that. A full frame sencor is probably the way things will go although I've got use to the 1x5 focal length most digi SLR's offer.
Enough said! At the end of the day the perfect Camera will never exist because we all ask different things from them.

I agree Steve, but 11mp wouldn't be bad too! :)

I like the idea of 11mp true resolution but i hope it not a full frame sensor---i have the 12-24 afs so ok at wide and love the crop on telephotos.

In my tests (and on other places on the web I have read), even though Nikon says you cannot use the 12-24DX on a full frame body, I have tried it and it does work. From 16-24mm, the image circle is large enough to fill the whole frame. From 15mm and under, well you'll get an image, but not full frame. So, if Fuji (or Nikon) comes out with a full frame body, we can use the 12-24 as a 16-24 lens. Not bad.
Try it out sometime!

Hi roel
Your right the 12-24 works fine on my F100 etc up to about 17mm--but for me the crop on the s2 is great-- i have a sigma 120-300 2.8 that on the s2 is a 450 2.8. As you will know the real money is the price of long fast lenses ----next to these the 12-24 seams cheap--thats why i love the aps size sensor.

Here's my take. If the S3, or whatever it will be called, has full frame, and I already own an S2, then it will be the best of both worlds. If I need a long lens I put the 200 on the S2, if I need wide then I put the wide lens on the S3.
Bring it on! $2k or less would be excellent.

I'm with you, Don. My only issue will be whether to get an S3 or an F6 with the Fuji back (22 megapixels) that Thom's been talking about.

I cant see nikon making an F6--I think most of there R&D is going just digital--trying to keep up with canon ?--- if they do then count me in--- only time will tell.

Peter ,
so get ready for a surprise . Nikon has a D6 or F6 on the drawing board with interchangeable backs ( film , Digital ...)
I wonder how big and heavier it will be .

Marcel

To me thats a great surprise--is it for real ?--- for me it would be good-- i still have all my film cameras and still like using film alongside the S2--but a interchangeable back would be great (i know leica has one planed)---i would still keep the S2 but its another string to the bow.I still like the idea of the crop but if it was say 14mp or so it would not be such a problem.

I wonder if there are any patent rights on names etc..
Why, because MEGAVISION has 2 models of digital backs called the S3Pro and S3 ?

Just wondering what Fuji is going to name the new camera ?

If Fuji IS going for full frame, basically it has to, because thanks to Kodak, Canon are running away with 1st prize now and converting many people.
Fuji will use the 12/22 mp chip, no point using anything else, plus why spend money developing anything else...
It might be called an S22 or an S12, it will be great, it might even be fitted to a Nikon F100 body ( lets be honest the cost of making the F100 was high and not many units sold compared to the N/F90's so Nikon would probably like some revenue back on it)
So, we get big chip, great colours and sharpness, better body and AF (Nikon F100) and, I'm afraid to say, poor software again..
If it's under $3,000 US I'll buy it and so will many others however, I think it will be $250 - $500 US ABOVE the Canon 1Ds because of the chip size interpolated.
Lets see how close we are in the forthcoming months...

Steve, I'm not very well in the SLR bodies, can you explain me the differences (at least main) between N80 - F100 - F5 ?
Shortcomings/advantages.
Thanks.

Igor,
The F100 is like an upgraded f90x solid body, still small and a great AF system. The F5 is the full on Pro (read big) body that sports guys use to capture ANYTHING, to big for me and for many a pro but essential if you are shooting press, pap or sport.
The F100 was and is a great improvement on the highly sucessful F90x (N90s).
And both were and are above the N80 F80 that the D100 and S2 are based.
I doubt Nikon expected so many potential buyers of the F100 to not buy it and go digital, either with the D1x/h, the D100 or the S2.
With that in mind, it doesn't take a fool to think a little and if Nikon let Fuji use the body for it's next pro camera, then Nikon would be getting more dosh from a project that took a lot of research time and money and sold few numbers (relatively) in the stores...

The autofocus system on the F100 is very fast and usually always right on the nose. The shutter goes to 1/8,000 sec. and it does not have a built-in flash. We still use the F100 for some work and it is a top quality weather tight camera. With a small lens and no battery pack it is small and easy to carry. With the battery pack you can shoot at 5 FPS and the batteries last forever. The F100 uses AA batteries which would make things more simple. On the bad side the F100 is pretty heavy compared to the N80. It is made of metal and not plastic and has extra weather proofing which adds to the weight. With a digital back it would be much more heavy than the S2 Pro. However, I think I could drive nails with my F100 so the extra weight might be worth it. Spin an F100 around your head at a wedding and watch all the "Cherry Pickers" scatter.
